Imagine a sixteen-year-old student in the village of Odisha’s Kaupani who doesn’t even know what the sport of hockey truly entails. Fast forward just twenty-four months, and that same teenager is now an 18-year-old Junior World Cup squad member who helped India win a bronze medal, and a Hockey India League (HIL) champion with the Vedanta Kalinga Lancers. Rohit Kullu’s story is a powerful reminder that there is no “right” or “wrong” time to start; when determination meets opportunity, fortune can shift in an instant.
Rohit is more than just a standout defender; he is a testament to the idea that life can change completely if you simply decide to pursue a path. “I studied until the 10th grade, then I went back to my village,” he says. “In my hometown, everyone plays hockey. Slowly, watching them, I developed an interest”. While the local environment sparked his curiosity, his deepest inspiration was closer to home. His father, a hockey player himself, would narrate stories of his own playing days, planting the seeds for a career that would soon take shape into something special. Without his own gear, Rohit began practicing on the village grass with a borrowed stick—a raw start that led him directly to the world-class blue turf of the Naval Tata Hockey Academy in Bhubaneswar.
Understanding the Odisha Pulse
As Rohit began to see life beyond his village, he realized the massive scale of the sport in his home state. “When I started, I didn’t realize how big hockey was here. I had only heard that it was popular in Sundargarh. But as I played more, I realized that Odisha produces so many Indian players and the state supports the sport so much”.
The Vedanta Kalinga Lancers, a team Rohit has been a part of for the past two seasons, features a backroom staff with immense experience and knowledge of hockey in the state. Rohit believes this support system of mentors and peers has been vital to his growth. “I have known coaches like Kariappa BJ since my hostel days. I love their practice sessions.” The collaborative environment even extends to technical analysis. “Even with Abhijeet, since we are from the same hostel, we have a bond. I can ask him for specific clips, and he shares them with me immediately”.
From Gaps to Gold
Joining the Kalinga Lancers was a formative period that required Rohit to bridge the gap between talent and professional execution. He is candid about the hurdles the team faced initially. “Last season, the team worked hard, but there were small gaps. We had a lot of problems in our back defense and with Penalty Corners (PC). Our structure would sometimes collapse in match situations”.
However, the franchise revamped the coaching set up with the arrivals of Head Coach Jay Stacy and Technical & Strategy Coach Pascal Kina helped turn the tide. “This season, the team was completely balanced in both defense and attack. We followed a structure which helped us tremendously. Kina sir guided us well. Even the international players were putting in great effort. I really liked the defensive structure Pascal Kina built. I learned a lot”. This evolution resulted in a more disciplined and strategic style of play.
Finding His Confidence
Part of his rise involved conquering the mental pressure of a professional league. “When we played in Chennai, I was a bit nervous initially. But by the second match, I was fine”. That comfort peaked when the team returned to familiar territory. “Then we came to Bhubaneswar—our home ground. It’s our home team”. The local support provided a decisive boost: “I performed well there because I felt a lot of confidence playing on my home turf”.
A Growing Legacy
Despite a rapid ascent that includes a title win and a national call-up, Rohit remains remarkably grounded. He is a young athlete who still experiences nerves before matches and finds simple joy in a plate of Chicken Biryani or a quiet walk through the city.
A defining moment in this early stage occurred during the HIL final. His mother was in the stands to witness the win, meeting him on the pitch after the game. “She was proud,” he says. It is a significant milestone for a player whose professional story is only just beginning.
